4 – 4:45 p.m. ET

An ongoing struggle for many in our profession is spending significant time preparing and delivering training that results in very little noticeable improvement when the workers return to their daily job. The reasons for why this happens may have little to do with the learning itself. Sometimes the issue is that we’re focused on the instruction without giving as much thought to the application. We focus on learning objectives rather than performance objectives, and as a result, we can show head counts of how many completed training but not how the training resulted in observable workplace improvements.

In this session, Paul Smith, head of co-worker development at Baker Construction Enterprises, will show attendees how to deliver upskilling focused on performance outcomes with personalized competency-based learning. Smith will take attendees through each step of the process, starting with determining if training is the solution, and then developing training based on each individual worker’s performance needs so leaders can track success. Only then can we consider how to focus training so learners walk away with demonstrable, tangible performance improvement. Attendees will be asked to consider an example from their own workplace to complete steps in this thought process. This is a practitioner-oriented session facilitated by a first-hand practitioner of the topic. Session elements will build on the contents from the speaker’s book: “Learning While Working: Structuring Your On-the-Job Training.”

This interactive session will provide easy-to-understand insights on how to:

  • Identify when the solution to a need is training or other operational interventions.
  • Determine job-based competency goals that align with organizational needs.
  • Construct a curriculum map for a learning program that focuses on application of learning.
