Many professionals in learning and development (L&D) have a handle on what good evaluation looks like, so why are these efforts sometimes met with an underwhelming reception? In L&D, we may have great answers, but perhaps aren’t hearing the right questions. Recently released guidelines on training evaluation recognize the critical nature of identifying all organizational stakeholders involved in employee training — but is this really what we’re doing?

In this session, Tom Whelan, director of research at Training Industry, will provide practical guidance on how to map the entire training stakeholder universe, from top-level management to the employees themselves, and everyone in between. He will explore the importance of understanding each stakeholder’s unique needs, expectations and contributions before setting a measurement strategy or refining existing training processes.

This session will provide insights on:

  • What traditional models of training evaluation (e.g., Kirkpatrick) miss about modern business.
  • How to conceptualize the various stakeholders in learning at your organization and align measurement practices to meet their needs.
  • Training Industry’s “5-4-3 framework” for learning evaluation, based on ISO 30437.

 


 

Dr. Tom Whelan

Dr. Tom Whelan is director of corporate research at Training Industry, Inc., where for the past decade he has been researching learner-, learning leader-, and market-level questions that affect modern organizations. Before joining Training Industry, he worked as an organizational consultant, designing and evaluating selection practices and training programs for the U.S. military and in industries such as pharmaceuticals and technology manufacturing. Tom has also published in leading scientific journals and presented at international conferences. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from North Carolina State University.
